Vol. 164 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Jet Runway.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) the present position with regard to the construction of the jet runway at Shannon Airport, (b) the probable date of commencement of work, (c) the estimated number of men to be employed, and (d) by what means such labour will be recruited.

At present plans for the proposed runway are being prepared. Some additional land will be necessary and steps are being taken to acquire the land. It is expected that planning will be completed early next year and it is estimated that it will be possible to place a contract for the construction of the new runway in June, 1958. The bulk of the work will be carried out by contract and recruitment of the labour involved will be a matter for the contractor concerned. It is estimated that about 150 men will be employed on the project.
