Vol. 164 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cancer from Cigarette Smoking.

asked the Minister for Health (a) if any steps are to be taken by his Department or through his Department by local health authorities to publicise the cancer causing properties of cigarette smoking, and (b) if any steps are to be taken in public assemblies to safeguard the health of non-smoking citizens by restricting cigarette smoking in such places.

The reply to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, no Minister has power under existing legislation to make regulations prohibiting smoking in places of public assembly.

Could the Minister say what precautions he has in mind? In reply to (a) of my question, the Minister states that steps are to be taken. What steps?

The ordinary procedure, admonishing the public not to do something, will be adopted in this case.
