Columns (a) and (b) show the number of manual workers engaged on roads and on housing and water and sewerage schemes carried out by direct labour, and on schemes under the Local Authorities (Works) Act.
Columns (c) and (d) show the number engaged on roads and on housing and water and sewerage schemes carried out by direct labour. As there were no new grants for Local Authorities (Works) Act schemes this year, returns were not obtained in respect of the men employed on completing a small number of schemes for which grants were allocated in 1956/57.
