Vol. 164 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Comparison of Money Values.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of 1934, 1948, 1955, and mid-August, 1957, the amount of money which would have been required to purchase the same volume of goods and services as could have been purchased in 1906 for £250.

The earliest date by reference to which information on the lines sought by the Deputy can be given is July, 1914, as there are no official statistics which afford a measure of changes in the value of money prior to that date. The approximate amount of money required to purchase the same volume of goods and services as £250 would buy in July, 1914, was £381 in 1934; £792 in 1948; £1,021 in 1955; and £1,140 in mid-August, 1957.
