Vol. 164 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dunkineely (Donegal) Garda Duties.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of occasions since Easter Sunday 1956, on which Gardaí from outside stations performed duty in Dunkineely Garda District and the cost of their so doing; and if he has satisfied himself that this action was justified.

The number of occasions was six. The cost (being the amount of travelling and subsistence allowances payable to the members concerned) was £5 11s. 2d. Both the district officer and the divisional officer are satisfied as to necessity for the allocation of extra members of the Garda Síochána to Dunkineely on the occasions in question. A decision on a matter like this must necessarily be left to the discretion of the responsible local officers who are in the best position to determine the needs of the situation.

Would the Minister agree that if this action were accompanied by vindictive motives it would be a very serious matter indeed and would the Minister agree——

I am satisfied that the Garda Síochána consider the requirements as being necessary.
