Vol. 164 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Improvement of Traffic Laws.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is now in a position to introduce legislation to improve the traffic laws of the State.

I have this matter under active consideration and I hope to be in a position to submit proposals to the Government in the near future.

Is the Minister aware that I asked this question several times before and got the same answer? I was told the last time that proposals were being prepared. Since one man a day is being killed on the roads, would the Minister say now that he would go back to his Department and put the spurs under the people supposed to be preparing these proposals for the past four or five years?

I can assure the Deputy that if I could save the life of one man a day, I would show a great deal of activity in order to achieve that end, but I am afraid that no matter what we can do in the way of tightening up the law, success will depend to a great extent on the individual effort of all of us.

Would the Minister not consider that conditions on the road would be improved if there were a new traffic code brought in and enforced immediately? I had the frightful experience of coming on that accident in Carlow the other night.

That would be the intention of any new code, but whether it would achieve the purpose or not is another matter.

Does not the Minister think that he should go back to his Department and ask the people who are supposed to be preparing this code to prepare it? We look like sitting only one day this week. Evidently we have plenty of time in the Dáil to deal with this and it should be brought before the House as quickly as possible.
