Vol. 164 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Galway Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what proposals are before the Land Commission regarding the acquisition and/or division of estates in North Galway, and, further, the names of the estates about to be divided.

Land Commission records are not kept on the basis of constituency areas. I understand, however, that in the North Galway district generally, proceedings have been instituted for the compulsory acquisition or resumption of 14 estates comprising 890 acres while negotiations are in progress for the voluntary purchase of three further estates comprising 1,160 acres. In addition, inquiries are being made by the Land Commission in respect of 16 estates or holdings involving an area of 900 acres with a view to considering the question of acquisition, resumption or purchase. There are about 3,000 acres of arable lands on hands in the district and there will be no avoidable delay in the disposal thereof. It is not possible to say definitely what areas will be allotted by the end of the current financial year but, if the Deputy is interested in any individual estate and furnishes me with particulars thereof, I shall have inquiries made regarding it.
