Vol. 164 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Forestry Schemes.

asked the Minister for Lands if it is the intention of his Department to acquire part of the Persse estate, Roxborough, County Galway, for the purpose of afforestation.

The Forestry Division of my Department is interested in acquiring two areas of old woodland, comprising about 96 acres, on the former Persse estate. These lands are at present in the hands of the Land Commission and a decision in regard to their final disposal has not yet been reached.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state how many forestry workers have been laid off, or are about to be laid off, in the Woodford area of County Galway, and if he will have immediate steps taken to initiate fresh schemes in order that these workers may be reemployed.

No men have yet been laid off at Woodford forest. It will be necessary to reduce the staff at one of the properties of the forest by six men in the near future owing to a reduction in the volume of labour requirements for road-construction at the property. It has not been found practicable to put on any other work on which these men could be usefully employed.
