Vol. 164 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Distempering Local Authority Houses and Cottages.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state what local authorities have adopted the policy of not distempering the inside walls of houses and cottages erected by them.

I am not in a position to give immediately a comprehensive list of the local authorities concerned. I am, however, having the information compiled and will forward it to the Deputy as soon as possible.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the consequent financial hardship on tenants and the adverse effect on employment in the painting trade, he will reconsider his recent instruction to Cork Corporation prohibiting internal distempering of houses in future schemes.

Having regard to the current high level of building costs of housing schemes undertaken by the Cork Corporation I do not feel justified in altering the suggestion that the corporation should adopt all possible and reasonable economies in house construction.

Can the Minister say what saving per house it is hoped will be made by this new order?

No, I am afraid I cannot give the Deputy that information. It is not correct to say that an instruction was given by my Department to the Cork Corporation. This matter was one of a number of economies that were suggested and which I think are now in operation with the cumulative effect of keeping rents down.

I may quote the Minister as saying it is not an instruction?

That is my information.
