Vol. 164 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Forces Recruitment and Discharges.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state in respect of the Defence Forces in the last 12 months (a) the number of recruits accepted, and (b) the number of members who have retired or been discharged.

I take it that the Deputy has in mind the Permanent Defence Force. The latest details conveniently available are in respect of the year ended 31st October, 1957, and the particulars required are as follows:—

(a) the number of recruits accepted for the Permanent Defence Force during that period was 1,216 (including 33 cadets); (b) during the same period 27 officers retired, 9 resigned and 701 non-commissioned officers and privates were discharged.

Can the Minister give the figure for the number of officers promoted?

No. I was not asked that question.
