Vol. 165 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electric Current for New Dwellings.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the E.S.B. refuse to connect current to new labourers' cottages and other dwellings unless the tenant pays a capital charge for erecting poles and wiring, which is beyond the means of a labourer on a weekly wage, and, if so, if he will introduce amending legislation with a view to reducing the hardship caused by present legislation.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that in October, 1956, they decided that a capital contribution from prospective consumers would in future be required for the provision of supply in rural areas which had already been developed under the rural electrification scheme, in which previously a special service charge would have been payable.

Under existing legislation the fixing of charges for the supply of electricity is a matter solely for the E.S.B. and amending legislation would not be required to alter any particular system of charge. Any representations which the Deputy may wish to make in the matter should, therefore, be addressed to the board.
