Vol. 165 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tuam Trades Council Resolution.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he has received a resolution from the Tuam Trades Council calling on him to grant substantial increases in payments to old age pensioners, widows, and orphans, and to those in receipt of unemployment assistance, or, alternatively, to have work provided for the unemployed, and, if so, what action he proposes to take.

I have received a copy of a resolution passed by the Tuam Trades Council, which was sent to the Minister for Finance, calling for increases in certain social welfare benefits. The resolution made no reference to the provision of work for the unemployed.

As regards the last part of the Deputy's question, I do not intend in present circumstances to ask the Government for funds to increase further the level of social welfare benefits; and I would remind him that old age pensions, widows' non-contributory pensions and unemployment assistance were all increased last summer in order to offset as far as possible the effect of the ending of the food subsidies.

I took it from what the Parliamentary Secretary said that he sent something to the Minister for Finance. What did he send him?

The resolution which was sent to the Minister for Finance.

What did he do about it?
