Vol. 165 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salary and Wage Increases.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the percentage increase in the wages and salaries of civil servants, bank officials, industrial workers, artisans, and agricultural workers since 1939.

Between the beginning of 1939 and the beginning of 1957 the increase per head in the average remuneration of non-industrial civil servants (excluding casuals) has been 139 per cent. This represents the change over the period in the quotient of the total remuneration divided by the number of persons employed.

The index number of weekly earnings of wage earners engaged in industries producing transportable goods has increased by 185 per cent. between October, 1939, and September, 1957. The index number of minimum weekly wage rates of adult male agricultural workers without free house or allowance of any kind has increased by 252 per cent. since July, 1939.

Separate information concerning the earnings of bank officials and artisans is not available.
