Vol. 165 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Berehaven Investigations.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state what reasons exist for the carrying out of special investigations by officers of his Department in the Berehaven area of County Cork relative to applications made for unemployment benefit and unemployment assistance.

Might I refer the Deputy to my reply to a question by Deputy Giles yesterday?

The recent investigations in the West Cork area is only one of a number of similar investigations which have been carried out by my Department throughout the country over the past 18 months as part of its effort to put a stop to a variety of abuses in relation to the payment of social welfare benefits, including unemployment assistance.
