Vol. 165 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition and Division of Galway Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands when the Land Commission took over the Grealish estate, Caranmore, Claregalway; and when it is proposed to divide it amongst the large number of uneconomic holders in the area.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the date on which the Land Commission took over the lands at Corbally, Cummer, Ballyglunin; the cause of the delay in the distribution of these lands; and when they will be distributed amongst the uneconomic holders in the area.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 18 and 21 together.

Possession of the lands of Caranmore West on the Grealish estate was taken in February, 1955; the lands of Corbally North on the Blake estate were acquired in February, 1952.

Due to pressure of more urgent work it has not been possible to allot these lands, but I expect that schemes for their disposal will be formulated this year.

asked the Minister for Lands what progress the Land Commission have made in connection with the acquisition of the Satchwell estate, Creggs, County Galway; and when it is likely that these lands will be divided amongst the uneconomic holders in that area.

The necessary detailed inquiries affecting an area of 300 acres of this estate have not yet been completed but a decision will be reached in the matter as soon as possible. The Land Commission do not propose to take any action as regards the balance of the lands.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the lands of Lady Cusack Smyth, O'Rourke estate, containing over 300 acres at Biggeramore, Corandulla, County Galway, have recently been offered for sale, and, if so, whether the Land Commission have decided to acquire the land for distribution amongst a large number of people with very low valuations in that area.

I understand that these lands have been sold recently. The Land Commission fully examined the possibility of resuming possession of this holding but, as the lands were not considered suitable for their purposes, they decided to take no action in the matter.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when the Land Commission took possession of the Cuniffe lands, Dunmore, County Galway; the cause of the delay in the distribution of the lands; and when it is expected that they will be distributed amongst the uneconomic holders in that area.

These lands were resumed in October, 1952, to facilitate rearrangement of holdings in the district. The delay in their disposal is due mainly to lack of co-operation by the tenants in the formulation of rearrangement proposals. A further attempt to rearrange the holdings will be made this year, when it is hoped that the co-operation of the tenants will be forthcoming.
