Vol. 165 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Ballycotton (Cork) Pier.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will now announce the result of the conferences between his Department and the Office of Public Works on the extension of Ballycotton pier, County Cork.

Ballycotton harbour will be one of those to be considered by a consultant of international repute who is being engaged to advise on fishery harbours.

A few months ago, the Minister informed me that an inquiry was taking place. His predecessor told me the same thing many months ago. Is there to be any decision on this matter by the Board of Works and the Department of Fisheries?

A harbours committee was set up, composed of officials of the Board of Works, of the Department of Fisheries and an expert of international repute. This committee is considering what should be done towards the development of our main fishery harbours.

The Minister's predecessor issued instructions to the Cork County Council in respect of this. On the instructions of that Department, the county council expended a considerable amount of money on boring operations for the extension of the pier. I should now like to know who is going to pay. If the Minister's Department will not do it, are the Cork ratepayers to be stuck for this expenditure?
