The total number of persons on Live Register at the local offices of the Department of Social Welfare situated in the City and County of Dublin was 19,474 on 15th February, 1958, the latest available date. Some of these registrants may reside outside the area in question and some registrants at other offices may live in the area. asked the Taoiseach if he will state the number of persons registered as unemployed in the last week of January, 1958, at the branch employment offices in Portlaoise, Tullamore, Birr, Edenderry, Rathdowney, Athy and Carlow.

The numbers of persons on the Live Register in the last week of January, 1958 (25th January, 1958) at the following local offices of the Department of Social Welfare were: Portlaoise 226, Tullamore 353, Birr 291, Edenderry 325, Rathdowney 89, Athy 127 and Carlow 215.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that this is an all-time record for unemployment in the area concerned?

It is not according to the figures I have.

I represent the constituency, the Parliamentary Secretary does not.

I can give the Deputy the figures if he wants them.
