Vol. 165 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Passports Facilities for Emigrants.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether the British Foreign Office propose to facilitate emigrants by opening an office in Dublin; whether the British Government made any representations in this matter; whether many Irish emigrants are applying for British passports, and are being supplied with documents at the British Embassy in Dublin; and if he will make a statement in the matter.

No passport is required to go to Great Britain, and it is not our policy where passports are required to refuse them to Irish citizens on the grounds that the applicant wishes to emigrate.

Passports are issued by my Department in Dublin and in the offices of the various missions abroad, and I understand that a somewhat similar practice is followed by other Governments.
