Vol. 165 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teaching of Irish.

asked the Minister for Education if he will take steps to review the teaching of Irish in all national schools for the purpose of remedying present defects.

asked the Minister for Education if he will indicate his attitude towards the present system of compulsory Irish; and whether it is proposed to change the present educational system, and, if so, when.

I propose with your permission a Cheann Comhairle, to take questions 67 and 68 together. As indicated by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach in Dáil Éireann on Wednesday 19th February in reply to a question from Deputy Browne an inquiry is to be instituted into the present position in regard to the teaching of the Irish language and as to the further steps that should be taken to ensure more rapid progress towards the effective restoration of the language. In the circumstances I do not propose to make any statement at this stage.

Can the Minister say when the inquiry is to be held?

The body has not yet been set up, but, as soon as it is set up, the inquiry will commence.

I may take it it will be set up this year?

Almost certainly.
