Vol. 165 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Evidence before Fair Trade Commission.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether there are any statutory provisions whereby the Fair Trade Commission may take action against persons who give false evidence before it and, if not, if he will introduce legislation to make such provision.

For the purpose of their functions under the Restrictive Trade Practices Act, 1953, the Fair Trade Commission are empowered to take evidence on oath. If any person giving evidence on oath in proceedings before the commission swears falsely in relation to any matter material to the issues involved in the proceedings, he is guilty of an offence under criminal law and may be dealt with accordingly.
