Vol. 165 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Offaly Bog.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that there are over 60 tenants seeking turf banks on Cloniffe Bog, near Shannonbridge, County Offaly, and, if so, if he will state whether the Land Commission are considering the taking over of this bog for the purpose of dividing it among deserving applicants at an early date.

The turbary referred to forms part of a large bog which is held in trust for tenants of the Williams estate. The question of acquiring the turbary was considered some years ago and was rejected. Fresh representations were received in recent months by the Land Commission urging acquisition of the Cloniffe portion of the bog with a view to its development for allotment to local people but I am not yet in a position to say what the outcome will be.
