Vol. 166 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Bread and Flour.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the increases which have taken place in the prices of flour and bread since March, 1957.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the effect on the Consumer Price Index of the increases in the prices of flour and bread since March, 1957.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 3 and 4 together.

Between mid-February, 1957 (the nearest date to March for which data are available) and mid-November, 1957 (the latest date for which figures have been compiled) the national average retail price of flour increased by 3/1 a stone and the price of bread increased by 4½d. a 2 lb. loaf. These increases accounted for a rise of 3.16 points in the Consumer Price Index (base: mid-August, 1947=100).
