Vol. 166 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fish Prices.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he stated recently at Clogherhead, County Louth, that the retail price of fish was far too high and that fishermen were catching too much whiting and, if so, what steps he proposes to take with reference to this matter.

At Clogherhead I stated that retail prices were too high at certain periods of the year and that, as a result, consumption of fish was less than it should be. I also said that whiting formed far too high a proportion of the total catch and referred in particular to the problem of small fish. By encouraging fishermen to change their gear and land larger quantities of better quality fish of the more popular varieties, I would hope to increase the consumption of fish and the income of the fishermen.
