Vol. 166 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nitrate Industry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the people of West Offaly and East Galway believe that a nitrate industry could be commenced in the area, and what steps he has taken to start such an industry in the area.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave on the 23rd October, 1957, to a Dáil Question on the subject of the establishment of a nitrogenous fertiliser industry. I am not yet in a position to say anything further.

Does the Minister recall some short time ago stating to the people of West Offaly that this project was delayed or retarded by the previous Government and that plans for its initiation were prepared by the previous Fianna Fáil Government?

The plans for the establishment of this project were in course of preparation early in 1954 and they are now being taken up again.

Did these plans envisage the initiation of this industry in West Offaly?

I am not making any further statement on that matter.

The Minister made a clear statement to that effect some time ago.

The position has changed in some respects since the plans were in preparation before and the effect of these changes is being considered.
