Vol. 166 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Employment in Limerick City.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the total numbers of (a) males and (b) females employed in industry in Limerick City for each of the years 1947 to 1957, inclusive.

Annual figures for persons engaged in manufacturing industry are obtained only for those concerns covered by the Census of Industrial Production. While separate particulars for males and females are compiled for the State as a whole, regional employment figures are prepared for total persons only. I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving these annual figures for the County Borough of Limerick for the years in question. Very considerable work would have to be done to obtain separate figures for males and females for each year the cost of which I do not consider would be justified by the value of the information obtained. The statement in question does, however, contain the employment data for Limerick County Borough for each sex for October, 1955, the last year for which the information is available.

At the Census of Population, 1951, the number of persons living in the County Borough of Limerick and returned as at work in manufacturing industry was 4,689, of which 3,342 were males and 1,347 were females. The census of population data cover all manufacturing industry whether included in the Census of Industrial Production or not and relate to persons enumerated in the county borough whatever their place of employment.

Following is the statement:—
