Written Answer. - Education Statistics.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (1) the average number of pupils per teacher in the national schools in the last year for which figures are available, (2) the present salary scale for national teachers, male and female, married and unmarried, (3) the total number of pupils on the rolls in (a) national and (b) secondary schools, (4) how many pupils sat for the leaving certificate examination in the most recent year for which figures are available, (5) the average value of a primary scholarship to a secondary school and (6) the average value of a scholarship awarded in the intermediate certificate examination.

(1) The average number of pupils per teacher in national schools in the school year 1956-57 was 35. (2) The salary scales and allowances of trained national teachers are as follows:—

Allowances for Special Qualification

Rent allowances for Married Men and Widow teachers

Children's allowances: £28 each for the third, fourth and fifth eligible child in the case of married men; £28 for each eligible child up to five in number in the case of widows.

(3) (a) The number of pupils on rolls in national schools on 30th June 1957 was 503, 381.

(b) The total number of recognised pupils on the rolls of secondary schools in 1957-58 is 66,221.

(4) The number of pupils who sat for the leaving certificate examination in 1957 was 7,565.

(5) Scholarships from primary to secondary and vocational schools are awarded by the State and by local authorities. These scholarships range in value from £35 to £80 for a residential scholarship and from £15 to £40 for a non-residential scholarship.

(6) The values of scholarships held in secondary schools in 1957-58 awarded on the results of the Intermediate Certificate examination were:

Boys:

1st Class—£40;

2nd Class—£20.

Girls:

1st Class—£30;

2nd Class—£15.
