Vol. 167 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Schools Medical Inspections.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the total number of schools in which schools medical inspection was carried out in 1955, 1956 and 1957, and the percentage of the total number of schools in each case.

The total number of schools in which school health examination was carried out was 2,077 in 1955, 2,406 in 1956 and 1,931 in 1957.

The relevant percentages are 43 per cent., 49 per cent. and 39 per cent., respectively.

Has the Minister any plan for increasing the number of inspections? They seem to me to be entirely inadequate.

A circular has been issued to local authorities asking them to have these inspections carried out periodically so that in the school life of the child it shall have a complete medical examination at least three times.
