Vol. 168 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Cran Baskets and Lobster Pots.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that cran baskets and lobster pots are being imported as secondhand or unmanufactured goods to the detriment of home producers of these articles; and if he will take steps to have this traffic stopped.

I am not aware that the articles mentioned are being imported to the detriment of home producers.

Is the Minister aware, then, that they are being imported without detriment to the home producers?

I have not been given any information about that. I will be glad to pass on to the Minister for Industry and Commerce any information of a suitable character given to me.

I have been informed that they are being imported in a roundabout way, in order to avoid certain duties and restrictions on newly-made articles. They are being imported unassembled or as secondhand articles. Will the Minister make inquiries about it?

If the Deputy will give me some information, I shall make inquiries.

I should inform the Deputy that cran baskets are subject to duty but that lobster post are not liable to import duty. He referred to both in his question.
