Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Clare Embankments.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the present position in regard to the embankments in County Clare; whether they are to be repaired, and if so, who will be responsible for their maintenance and upkeep when completed.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the present position concerning the embankments in County Clare; whether it is intended to carry out repairs; and if he will make a statement in the matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 13 and 14 together.

Works under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, have been in progress since 1955 on embankments in the vicinity of the Owenogarney River, Bunratty, County Clare, and are expected to be completed within the next few months.

Embankments along the River Shannon between Bunratty and Rineanna were recently transferred under the Act to the control of the Commissioners of Public Works and the necessary work of reconstruction and repair will shortly be put in hands.

An engineering survey has been made of certain embankments on the River Fergus downstream of Clarecastle, and the results of the survey are being studied.

The Commissioners will maintain completed embankment works and the cost will be recovered from the county council in accordance with the provisions of the Act.
