Vol. 168 No. 7

Written Answers. - Government Expenditure.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state separately how much the Government (1) spent in each of the years 1928-29, 1938-39 and 1948-49 and (2) will spend in 1958-59 of each pound collected on the following services (a) social services: (1) old age pensions (ii) children's allowances (iii) other social assistance (iv) social insurance (v) employment schemes (vi) administration of social services (vii) health and (viii) education; (b) agriculture: (i) forestry (ii) fisheries (iii) land division (iv) agricultural grants and (v) other agricultural services; (c) local government and transport: (i) roads (ii) houses (iii) drainage and (iv) public transport; (d) public services: (i) President's Establishment and Houses of the Oireachtas (ii) Army (iii) Garda Síochána (iv) superannuation and (v) debt services; and (c) miscellaneous.

Figures for estimated expenditure from revenue in 1958-59, based on the detail in the published Budget Estimates, are given in the following table. It is not possible to give comparable figures in respect of actual expenditure in 1928-29, 1938-39 and 1948-49 because of changes in the content of Votes and Sub-heads of Votes, variations in treatment, as between capital and non-capital services, in relation to many heads of expenditure and because current expenditure did not, in fact, coincide with revenue receipts in these years.
