Vol. 169 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Insemination Stations: Beef Strain Nominations.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if his attention has been drawn to the returns from insemination stations for 1957, which show that beef strain nominations have increased to almost 60 per cent. of all nominations; and what steps he proposes to take to ensure that a continuance of this trend will not eventually affect the future supply of dairy heifers.

I am aware that in 1957 beef inseminations represented 56 per cent. of all inseminations carried out.

The question of the supply of dairy heifers for herd replacements is a matter of serious concern particularly in regard to the development of the bovine tuberculosis eradication scheme.
