Vol. 170 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Capital Expenditure on Housing.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the year 1957-58 the amount of capital expenditure on housing by the State and local authorities, and the estimated amount for 1958-59.

The amount of the capital expenditure on housing by the State and local authorities in the financial year 1957-58 was £10.74 million. The corresponding expenditure for the year 1958-59 was estimated at £9.27 million for budgetary purposes.

The expenditure of £10.74 million in 1957-58 included a sum of approximately £750,000 in respect of abnormal carry-over from 1956-57. The budgetary estimate for 1958-59 will, it is anticipated, require to be increased in the light of the effect of the proposals contained in the Housing (Amendment) Bill, 1958, but it is not possible at this stage to indicate the likely extent of the increase.

Has the Minister got the 1955-56 figure handy?

I am afraid I have not.
