Vol. 170 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prevention of Flooding in County Dublin Areas.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the Dublin County Council is prepared to carry out an improvement scheme for the purpose of preventing flooding in the Dundrum/Windy Arbour area, and has submitted a scheme to his Department for a grant under the Local Authorities (Works) Act; and, if he will sanction a grant for this purpose.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will sanction a grant to the Dublin County Council under the Local Authorities (Works) Act for a scheme to alleviate flooding of a stream at Redesdale, Stillorgan, County Dublin.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 40 and 41 together.

Dublin County Council requested a grant in February last for the carrying out of a scheme under the Local Authorities (Works) Act to relieve flooding in the Dundrum-Windy Arbour area. They were informed that there were no funds available for grants for schemes under the Act. No recent proposal has been received from the county council for a grant for a scheme at Redesdale.

As the Deputy is aware, the matter has been under further consideration arising out of more recent flooding in these and other suburban areas and I have brought the need for action to the attention of the local authorities. When appropriate schemes are in order for approval in respect of the built-up areas concerned, it may be found that their execution will come under the Sanitary Services Acts rather than the Works Act. In that event State assistance would be by way of subsidy of loan charges and not by way of grant.
