Vol. 170 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Weight of Bakers' Bread.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if a systematic check is kept on bakers' bread to ensure that production conforms to the required weights.

The law requires that bread be sold by weight, but does not specify that it be sold in any specific units of weight.

A purchaser of bread may ask the seller to state the weight of the loaf and it is then open to the purchaser to have the loaf weighed by the local inspector of weights and measures. If the weight so ascertained is less than the weight represented by the seller, proceedings may be taken against him.

May I ask the Parliamentary Secretary whether the weights and measures inspector of his own volition inspects, or if any inspection is carried out with regard to weight?

The procedure is a matter for the Minister for Justice, I think.

Must it be initiated by the customer?

That appears to me to be the case.
