Vol. 170 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dooagh (Mayo) School.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the date on which the erection of the new Dooagh school, County Mayo, (a) was sanctioned by his Department and (b) was completed.

A grant towards the cost of erecting the new school at Dooagh, County Mayo, was sanctioned by my Department on 26th May, 1954. The erection of the school was completed on 31st May, 1958. I understand that the new school, which was designed for a water flushed system of sanitation, has not been occupied as the public water supply has not yet been made available by the local authority.

Further investigations will be made as to the feasibility of sinking a well on or near the site to provide a water supply for the school.

In view of the fact that the school is completed for the past few months will the Minister say what is the reason for this delay?

The plans for the building of the school included provision for flush water services. It was expected then that the Mayo County Council would have provided a public water supply but, in case that this does not happen, provision was made for temporary latrines. The public water supply has not been provided and it will take some two years at least before it is provided. Under these circumstances the manager objects to the use of the temporary latrines and the sinking of a well is now being investigated as an alternative.
