Vol. 170 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Investment of External Capital.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of each of the years since 1947 the estimated amount of external capital invested in the State.

The information in connection with capital movements is shown in the capital account of the Balance of International Payments Statement. The statement covering the years 1952-56 was published in the March, 1957, issue of the Irish Trade Journal and Statistical Bulletin and statements covering the years 1947-51 are contained in the June, 1952, June, 1953, June, 1954, March, 1955, and March, 1956, issues of the journal. The June, 1958, issue of the journal, to be published shortly, will contain the information in respect of 1957.

As I explained in reply to a somewhat similar question from the Deputy on the 20th March last, external capital invested in the State may appear on the statement under a number of headings but it is not possible from the available information to give a reliable estimate of the total of such investment.
