Vol. 171 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Afforestation Employment in Oughterard Area.

asked the Minister for Lands what proposals he has for increased employment on afforestation at Cnic-Na-Leica area, Oughterard, County Galway; and what steps he has taken to implement them.

The area named by the Deputy does not appear on the Forestry Division's records. I am assuming that he is referring to the Derroura-Currareevagh area to the north of Oughterard. The total productive area held for forestry purposes in this district on 31st March last was 748 acres, of which 646 acres had been planted, leaving a reserve of 102 acres. It is intended to plant 82 acres there this year and preparatory work is at present in progress employing six men. This number is adequate to deal with the work at present on hands but some additional men may be needed for planting when that operation commences.

Two additional areas totalling 110 acres were acquired in this district recently. These areas will not be planted this year but will be held over as part of the plantable reserve. It is probable that they will be included in next year's programme. Agreement to purchase four further areas totalling 340 acres has been reached and negotiations for the purchase of three areas totalling 566 acres are in progress. These cases will be expedited as much as possible.
