Vol. 172 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade Agreements with Iron Curtain Countries.

11.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether this country has a trade agreement with any country behind the Iron Curtain.

The term "iron curtain" is not a legal expression of which there is a precise definition. I assume, however, that the Deputy has in mind the following countries or territories: Albania, Byelorussia, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Roumania, Ukraine, U.S.S.R., and the Eastern Zone of Germany.

Apart from an exchange of Notes with Roumania of October, 1930, which provides simply for the mutual grant of most favoured nation treatment on the import of goods, we have no trade agreement with any of those countries or territories.

The Minister is surely aware that we are trading with these countries?

The Deputy asked me whether we had trade agreements with them.

I shall ask the other question at another time, but if we are trading with them, where do we get the currency to do so?

Sin ceist eile.
