Vol. 172 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio-Activity Detection Scheme.

8.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he proposes to introduce a nation-wide scheme, similar to that carried out in Sweden, for the detection and notification of radio-activity to prevent the harmful effects which may be suffered by citizens who are unaware of its existence.

The Civil Defence arrangements which are now being developed will provide for a nation-wide monitoring service for the detection and notification of radio-activity arising from nuclear explosions in time of war. It would be hoped that, by appropriate warning and advice and by such other steps as it might be possible to take, the citizens of an area likely to be affected would be enabled to mitigate if not entirely prevent the harmful effects of such radio-activity.
