Vol. 173 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Monaghan Supplementary Road Grants.

54.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether it is intended to make any supplementary grants over and above the usual grants from the Road Fund to help the local authority in County Monaghan to repair and maintain roads in view of the increased burden placed upon them consequent on the closing down of C.I.E. passenger transport facilities in that county.

Monaghan County Council were informed on 24th January, 1959, that a special road improvement grant of £45,000 has been allocated to them for 1959-60 to enable them to deal with special problems arising from recent branch railway line closings in their area. It is intended to provide further grants to the council for the same purpose in the following four financial years in respect of schemes which come within the terms and conditions of the present allocation and which can be fully or substantially completed within five years from 1st April, 1959.

The council has been requested to submit to my Department a suitable five-year programme of road works.
