Vol. 173 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Galway Christmas Mail Deliveries.

30.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state (a) the number of postmen in West Galway who applied for extra help for the delivery of letters and parcels during the Christmas period in 1958, (b) the number who were refused, and (c) why they were refused.

Eighteen applications were received for assistance to postmen in West Galway in the delivery of letters and parcels during the 1958 Christmas period. Assistance was provided in all cases for parcel delivery. Fifteen applications for letter post assistance were not met because such assistance was not considered warranted. In rural areas the employment of extra staff on the delivery of Christmas letter mail is justified only in isolated cases where exceptional circumstances obtain.
