Vol. 173 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Hairdressers.

8.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether any scale of wages is prescribed in regard to the employment of hairdressers (male and female) in (a) the country generally, and (b) Limerick City and, if so, if he will give details; whether the hours of employment are prescribed for such employees; and whether the scale of wages and prescribed hours are being complied with.

No scale of wages is prescribed for hairdressers either in the country generally or in Limerick City. The maximum hours of work of hairdressers (as well as those of other shop workers) are prescribed in the Shops (Conditions of Employment) Act, 1938. Broadly speaking, that Act provides that for adult shop workers the working day shall not be longer than 11 hours and the working week not longer than 48 hours. Special provision is made regarding working hours for juveniles and there are limits on the amount of overtime that may be worked. So far as I am aware, these hours are being observed generally by employers throughout the country.
