Vol. 173 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Weekly Half-holiday for Post Office Workers.

12.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will grant a weekly half-holiday to all sections of his Department.

The scheme of conciliation and arbitration for the Civil Service enables Civil Service grades to make claims for improvements in their conditions of service. A claim that those Post Office grades which have not a weekly half-holiday at present should receive one has been submitted to the Departmental Conciliation Council and is at present under consideration.

Is the Minister aware that this matter has been under consideration for the past three years? Further, is the Minister aware that the Government have made an Order giving a half-holiday to industrial employees? I think it is only right the Minister should ensure that these people get fair play.

The matter is being actively considered at the moment.

Would the Minister explain what he means by "actively"? The matter has been under consideration now for three years.
