Vol. 173 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Donegal Unemployment Assistance Payments.

12.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the cause of delay in paying to applicants in West Donegal the unemployment assistance to which they are entitled, as in many cases there are delays of six weeks and longer from the date of application until the first payments are made.

I am aware that there has been delay in some cases in making payments of unemployment assistance in West Donegal. I am satisfied that these delays, which are regretted, were attributable to quite exceptional circumstances at the branch employment office concerned. Remedial measures were taken immediately the matter came to the notice of my Department and such arrears as there were at the branch employment office are being cleared rapidly.

13.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the number of applicants for unemployment assistance whose means have been reinvestigated by investigation officers at Falcarragh, Dungloe, Glenties and Killybegs, County Donegal, during the year ended the 28th February, 1959.

The figures for Dungloe, Glenties and Killybegs are 195, 122 and 146, respectively. There is no social welfare officer stationed at Falcarragh. Cases from that area are dealt with by the officer at Dungloe and are included in the figure given for that station.
