Separate totals of amounts paid for new house grants and reconstruction are not available for the entire period but the payments in respect of new houses are estimated at £1,372,050 in 1956-57, and at £820,291 in 1957-58. Payments in respect of reconstruction cases are estimated at £716,204 in 1956-57, and at £622,344 in 1957-58. The balance of the total amount paid represents miscellaneous types of cases such as letting grants (Section 19 of the Housing Act, 1948) and grants to local authorities for reserved houses.
