Vol. 174 No. 2

Written Answers. - House Building and Reconstruction.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the number of houses built in each year from 1945 to 1958, inclusive, by local authorities, and the amount paid in housing grants in each of those years for private building, distinguishing between new houses and reconstructions.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the official report.

Separate totals of amounts paid for new house grants and reconstruction are not available for the entire period but the payments in respect of new houses are estimated at £1,372,050 in 1956-57, and at £820,291 in 1957-58. Payments in respect of reconstruction cases are estimated at £716,204 in 1956-57, and at £622,344 in 1957-58. The balance of the total amount paid represents miscellaneous types of cases such as letting grants (Section 19 of the Housing Act, 1948) and grants to local authorities for reserved houses.
