Vol. 174 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Investigation of Kenya Camp Allegations.

17.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he will raise at UNO the recent disclosures concerning the alleged murder of eleven persons in a camp in Kenya, with a view to seeing that the British Government be asked to arrange for the fullest investigation of all aspects of this case by an impartial authority under UNO, and suggest that all such camps be opened for investigation by a United Nations delegation.

I have seen Press reports of the distressing events to which the Deputy refers. As the Deputy is aware, an inquest is now being held, and the Kenya Government has indicated that it will decide whether to hold a further inquiry when the findings of the inquest become known.

As Deputies are aware, the General Assembly of the United Nations does not meet until September. The question of whether it would be appropriate for this country to take any action in the matter will have to be decided in the light of the circumstances prevailing at that time.
