Vol. 174 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Border Customs Delays.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has received a copy of a resolution passed by the Buncrana Urban District Council protesting against customs delays at the Bridgend post; what action has been taken in regard thereto; and whether he is satisfied that the methods of inspection at the Border in this area are not unduly harsh.

I have received a letter on this subject from the Clerk to the Buncrana Urban District Council. I am aware that delays in customs clearance at Bridgend Frontier Post have occurred at peak traffic periods. Speedy clearance at this point presents special difficulties for the reason that the heavy flow of incoming traffic at such times cannot be accommodated in multiple lanes on the narrow roadway. I fully appreciate the importance of maximum expedition in clearance and various measures, including augmentation of the local customs staff, are being taken towards this end. I am satisfied that the methods of inspection in this area are not more strict than is essential for reasonably effective customs control.
