Vol. 174 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Condensed Milk Factory.

19.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what proposals, if any, exist for the extension of activities in the Condensed Milk Factory, Lansdowne, Limerick, by the Dairy Disposal Company, Ltd.; if he is aware of the urgent necessity for increasing production generally by seeking markets for the full capacity of the factory's output, in view of the fact that the workers are at present, and have been for many years, on staggered time; and if he will state the names of the present members of the Dairy Disposal Company, Ltd., and the dates and duration of their appointments.

The Condensed Milk Company of Ireland (1928) Ltd., which operates the factory, is at present actively examining the question of the manufacture of additional lines of milk products, but it would be premature for me to make a more detailed statement in the matter at this stage. I can assure the Deputy that the Company fully appreciates the desirability of securing remunerative markets for an output up to the factory's full capacity and that it is the Company's aim at all times to provide maximum employment at the factory. The Deputy will appreciate that the international market situation for dairy products has been extremely difficult for some time past and is a source of concern to producing countries generally.

As regards the last part of the Question, I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave to a Question by Deputy Larkin on the 25th February, 1959. There has been no change in membership since then.
