Vol. 174 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clothing Supplies: Requirements of Controller of Stores.

26.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the estimated requirements of the Controller of Stores of clothing supplies for the current financial year, and the details of the allocation of the supplies to (a) the Army, (b) the Post Office, (c) the Gardaí, and (d) general; what orders are being carried out at present by the Limerick Clothing Factory for the Controller of Stores; what further orders remain to be executed by them; what method is followed in accepting a particular tender; and why, as in all other businesses, the list of all tenders is not made available when a specific tender has been accepted in order that more competitive prices might result.

As the information in regard to the estimated clothing requirements is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

The Limerick Clothing Factory Ltd. have contracts from my Department at present for the supply of approximately 20,000 articles of woollen clothing, of which some 18,500 remain to be delivered.

Orders are arranged on the basis of acceptance of the most favourable quotations following receipt of tenders. As I advised the Deputy in reply to a similar Question by him on this point on the 20th March, 1958, the tender prices are not disclosed because I am satisfied, for the reasons which I then gave, that it would not be in the public interest to do so and that if it were done, higher prices would result.

NOTE. — Some of the items ordered for the Post Office, e.g., trousers and overalls are also issued to certain grades in other Departments. The total requirements of these are shown against the Post Office as it would be difficult to apportion them between "Post Office" and "Others". The quantities issued to other grades are relatively small.
