Vol. 174 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Regional Hospital.

8.

asked the Minister for Health if an officer of his Department has been investigating the running of Galway Regional Hospital with a view to effecting economies; and if he will make a statement on the findings of that officer.

An officer of my Department is carrying out an inspection of the Galway Regional Hospital in the normal course of his duties with a view to effecting economies.

Certain measures to secure economies without, of course, impairing efficiency, have been discussed on the spot with officers of the local authority and effect has been given to them. A number of other measures are still under investigation and, consequently, I am not at present in a position to make any general statement in regard to the matter.

Is the Minister aware that certain conditions which are being enforced on the nurses will lead to wholesale resignations of the permanent staff, because of a recommendation of an officer of his Department?

I am not so aware. Anyone who resigns would be very foolish.

Will the Minister inquire into the matter?

I have inquired.

If the Minister did inquire, why is he "not aware"?
